There are objects we own, and then there are objects that somehow become part of us.

A wedding ring is, materially speaking, metal and stone. A family photograph is ink and paper. A grandmother’s recipe may be nothing more than handwriting on an aging index card.

And yet, try telling the person who treasures one that it is just a thing.

Human beings have always been rather good at making the physical sacred.

Perhaps that explains some of the enduring appeal of Breathe Inspiring Gifts, where crystals, candles, minerals, jewelry, incense and other objects occupy shelves—but the real commodity being exchanged is often something considerably harder to package.

Resonance.

That peculiar experience of encountering something outside ourselves that somehow speaks to something within.

For owner Jena, that was the idea from the beginning.

She opened her first Breathe store in 2006 after experiencing the deaths of two people close to her. Sitting through their services and hearing their eulogies, Jena noticed something that stayed with her: both had left evidence of themselves in the lives of other people.

“I realized that was something I wanted to be able to have said about me after I’m gone,” she recalls.

So she built a store.

Not simply a place to purchase things, she explains, but “a space of community for like-minded people” where customers could find objects they connected with spiritually and emotionally, particularly during difficult periods in their lives.

Twenty years later, that original idea still poses an interesting question:

Why do we reach for tangible things when navigating the intangible parts of being human?

From Survival to Sanctuary

Breathe’s story has not been one uninterrupted exercise in good vibrations.

Jena’s business has survived economic upheaval, changing locations, competition, geographic expansion and a pandemic.

In 2009, with the business struggling, Jena sold one of her cars to make rent and keep Breathe operating.

Years later, when pandemic restrictions affected her New York locations, she found herself facing a strangely familiar decision.

She sold another car.

There is something revealing about that—not necessarily about retail, but about attachment.

Businesses are usually discussed through the language of numbers: revenue, inventory, rent, margins and growth. Yet small businesses frequently contain something considerably more personal. They become extensions of the people who created them.

Jena wasn’t merely protecting merchandise on shelves. She was protecting the community she had spent years creating around it.

Eventually that community found its way to Texas.

Opening in San Antonio meant learning a new place and a new community. Jena described herself and her son as New Yorkers who were “fish out of water” in Texas. Her son, who grew up within the company, began meeting local artisans and discovering the character of their new community.

For a business founded on connection, Texas offered the opportunity to begin that process all over again.

And Breathe remains part of San Antonio today.

Why a Rock Becomes More Than a Rock

Jena’s own relationship with crystals began long before Breathe.

She received her first crystal at 18 and had begun reading cards several years earlier. But she says it was around 2009—during a period when she was navigating the identities of business owner, wife and mother—that crystals became a more significant part of her personal practice.

She incorporated them alongside Reiki, yoga philosophy and her understanding of the chakra system.

To Jena, crystals possess individual energetic qualities that people can interact with spiritually or emotionally. She describes using them for grounding, discernment and as physical companions to intention.

For the anthropologically curious, however, one needn’t share Jena’s beliefs to recognize something deeply familiar in the practice.

Humans have carried meaningful objects for thousands of years.

We wear crosses and medals. We carry photographs. We save seashells from vacations, press flowers between book pages, keep lucky coins in pockets and pass jewelry from one generation to another.

The materials vary.

The human impulse does not.

We seem to like giving invisible things a physical address.

Love becomes a ring. Memory becomes a photograph. Faith becomes a symbol.

And sometimes intention becomes a stone held in the palm of a hand.

Jena compares crystals to bringing plants into the home: something originating in nature enters our personal environment and changes our experience of the space.

Whether someone interprets that change energetically, psychologically, symbolically or simply aesthetically may depend entirely upon the person.

And according to Jena, that’s rather the point.

You Are the Author

Rose quartz provides perhaps the easiest example.

It is commonly associated in crystal traditions with love, and Jena has encountered customers arriving at Breathe specifically seeking it for that reason.

But she doesn’t particularly like stopping with what a book says a stone is supposed to mean.

“You get to be the author of your own story,” she says.

A person might choose rose quartz expecting romance and instead discover that holding it feels calming. Jena encourages people to pay attention to that individual response rather than insisting upon someone else’s prescribed interpretation.

Not every crystal, she says, resonates with every person in precisely the same way.

And there is that word again.

Resonance.

Perhaps that is ultimately what Breathe invites people to discover.

Inside its San Antonio store, visitors encounter crystals, gems, minerals, fossils and geodes alongside candles, handcrafted jewelry, essential oils, incense, singing bowls, books and distinctive pieces for the home. Breathe also announces classes and other in-store experiences, giving the community opportunities to explore practices beyond the objects themselves.

But underneath all of it is permission to explore.

There is no requirement that the person entering the door arrive with certainty.

Perhaps they believe crystals carry energy.

Perhaps they believe ritual helps focus the mind.

Perhaps they simply think a geode looks spectacular on the coffee table.

All three people are capable of finding something that resonates.

And maybe that is why places like Breathe continue to exist in an increasingly digital world.

Modern life has become remarkably efficient at giving us information while remaining rather terrible at telling us what to do with everything we feel.

We can ask a phone almost any question imaginable and receive an answer within seconds. Yet the oldest questions remain stubbornly ours.

What do I need?

What am I carrying that no longer belongs to me?

What makes me feel grounded?

What do I believe?

Who am I becoming?

Twenty years ago, grief caused Jena to ask herself another question:

What would people say about the life she had lived after she was gone?

Her answer wasn’t written on paper.

She built it.

And somewhere inside Breathe, perhaps between a singing bowl, a candle and a piece of rose quartz, another person may walk through the door searching for a gift and unexpectedly discover something that speaks to them.

Because sometimes a crystal is simply a beautiful piece of the Earth.

And sometimes what we carry home isn’t really the point.

It’s what resonates within us when we find it.
